Longer 'output file'
« on: July 23, 2009, 01:28:07 PM »

On more complex projects I get numerous scenes, shots, cameras and passes that all go in their own seperate folder.
The number of character in the 'Output File' box is limited to a small number, so when I use a folder in a folder in a folder, it cuts off my filename.
Could this be longer? I now use 'a better finder rename' on my Mac to rename all files but not having to do this would be easier!

Surprisingly this is nothing we actually have control over, the length is limited by the LW GUI.

A few things come to mind though:
If you render to the content directory, you may use a relative name (i.e. images\render\my_pass\) as opposed to the full path.
Maybe you can use some of the variables introduced in V1.4 to shorten the name, i.e.%scene% or %camera% to insert the current scene/camera name.
As a last resort, set the base file name in the LW render globals and then use that from exrTrader.

I'll also see what I can do about getting around the limit.

Cheers,
Mike

Hi Aljen,

I just double checked our code and there is no character limit on our side, so it's LW.

Hm, I wonder what a good solution would look like...

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks for getting back so fast!
If LW is restricting the character length, how come I don't have any problem with using LW's own render panel? Funny stuff...
I'll check your solutions to see which one helps me out.
Thanks!

Don't ask me Wink Seriously though, some things are a mystery - but different parts of the LW GUI use different (internal) toolkits.
I could of course replace it with juat a requester... but that would only allow you to pick existing directories... and not edit the path manually. So that's no solution either.

Cheers,
Mike
