db&w Tools V1.7 released
« on: September 14, 2010, 04:13:53 PM »
Hello there,

we've just released a new version of the free db&w Tools which adds a new plugin:

Depth Limiter (Pixel Filter)

This pixel filter limits the distance values stored in the depth buffer during rendering. Any distance greater than the limit will be set to the limit.

The reason for this is to improve the quality of depth buffer anti-aliasing in cases where huge distances are stored in the depth buffer (such as rendering on a blank backdrop or using certain volumetric renderers such as xStream).

A sensible value would be a bit higher than the biggest distance that an items is away from the camera (taking the extent of the item into account of course).

More information is available at http://tools.db-w.com
You can download the new version here: http://www.db-w.com/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,84/func,select/id,13/

Cheers,
Mike

First of all, thanks for this great plug ins collection.
I have a "requestion" about the single light lambert shader.
Is it possible to add an option allowing to bypass the exclude/include info of the light ?
I try to use this lambert with DPFNE. I would like to add a pass with a specific light but I don't want this light interact with the actual scene.
Of course, if a exclude all object for this light or if I put the light intensity to 0%, the SingleLight Shader  render a wrong image.

Hope it make sense
Hope it's possible

Cheers,

Vincent

Light exclusion is ignored if you pick a specific light in the node. If that still doesn't work then something else isn't working within the SDK.

If you want all lighting plus the excluded light, then you can add a single light lambert with no lights selected and one with the excluded light selected and add up the result (vector add).

Cheers,
Mike

ok I think I made a little mistake yesterday. Sorry
I made a new test with a clean brain now !

When I exclude the object from the light I use, the shader doesn't render shadows.
When I use the shader in a scene with an object unseen by camera, this object start to be rendered too and LW crash.
The shader is used  within DPFNE.

Thanks for you help

Vincent

Hm, this is odd but makes sense. The object is still excluded by lights that hit other surfaces.

That's odd. The shader is extremely simple so I suppose it's another issue then.

Can you send me a sample scene? michael.wolf@db-w.com

Mike

finally I have got something for you.
If it works as excepted, the scene will NOT crash.
To make it crash : turn off depth of field (!)
It's a strange behavior

Thank for your time

That sounds extremely strange and makes me wonder if I really have control over it.

I'll take a looksee as soon as possible, this week is quite swamped though.

Cheers,
Mike

Hi there, I'm just trying out the Schlick's Approximation node, but actually I have no idea how to use it, I don't know what plugs into what. Yeah, I'm not smart with this stuff. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm trying to use it on an existing surface at the moment.

Did you look at the website? It's the fourth node from the top here: http://www.db-w.com/products/dbwtools/docs?start=1 - and there's a screenshot of a simple node graph.

I can also prep a simple scene if you'd like.

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks, I did not see that tab, no don't bother with prepping a scene, I think I got it now.

I suppose it does a lot less than the fancy name suggests. ;)

I still think it's quite handy though.

Hello,

I have an issue with the cache node when I do a render on the farm. I redid almost all of my materials to use your cache node and, as render farm admin reports, 70% of the frames freeses during loading. On my local computer I used to render it with no issues. Do you have any suggestions?

Hello Konstantin,
I've not yet seen the issue or heard of it.
a) Make sure to use the latest version
b) if you still have problems, please mail me with a sample scene (or a sample of how you use the node) and information about which OS and which version of LW you're using - michael.wolf@db-w.com
I'll try to find out what's happening.

Cheers,
Mike

Hello Mike,

I sent the surface preset to your e-mail. Any suggestions?
